Technical FAQ

Q1: Is the 1746-IO12 compatible with the MicroLogix 1000 or MicroLogix 1100?
No. The 1746-IO12 is designed exclusively for the SLC 500 1746 chassis backplane. MicroLogix 1000 and 1100 are fixed I/O controllers that do not accept 1746 expansion modules. For MicroLogix 1100 I/O expansion, the 1762 (MicroLogix Expansion) module family is required.

Q2: Can the 1746-IO12 replace a 1746-IA8 (8-point input) + 1746-OA8 (8-point output) combination?
Only if the application requires 6 or fewer inputs and 6 or fewer outputs. The 1746-IO12 provides 6 inputs and 6 outputs; the IA8/OA8 pair provides 8 of each. If all 8 points of either module are utilized in the existing program, substitution requires I/O address remapping in RSLogix 500 and field wiring modification. A direct drop-in replacement without program changes is not possible.

Q3: Is the 1746-IO12 certified for use in hazardous (classified) locations such as Zone 1 or Class I Div 1?
No. The 1746-IO12 carries UL 508 and CSA C22.2 No. 142 industrial control equipment certifications but is not rated for hazardous location installation (no ATEX, IECEx, or Class I Div 1/2 listing).
